A Track-Record of Accomplishments

Protecting Shelby Township Taxpayers

A trusted voice. An honest leader.

So, what has John done as trustee?

As a business owner, I know the value of hard work and the productive, long-standing outcomes that result from focus, determination, commitment, collaborative teamwork, and accountability.

As a Trustee, I apply myself daily – in each of these aspects – to accomplish what I believe all of us in Shelby Township desire:

  • Taking the lead in defending township homeowners against multi family and duplex units which devalue the value of their (investment) homes and their quality of life.
  • Lowest millage rate of 9.29 Mils of any community with 24/7 police and fire services.
  • 23 million dollars in new road improvements
  • 2 new fire stations resulting in faster response times
  • New automated CPR machines for our Fire Department resulting in better patient outcomes, i.e. reduced chances of becoming incapacitated.
  • New Senior / Recreation Center
  • New Police Station Addition
  • New Courthouse
  • Improved bike trails – safer recreational opportunities for all our citizens
  • New library to be completed in the Fall
  • All paid in cash, without a tax increase or going into debt
  • No new lawsuits filed by any Township vendors against the Township on Trustee Vermeulen’s watch
  • Ranked – Top 20 Best places to live in Michigan
  • Ranked – Top 21st Safest Community to live in Michigan

Keep John as Shelby Township Trustee

“I Will Continue to be a Strong, Courageous and Ethical Voice for the People of Shelby Township.”

-John Vermeulen

I have been married to my wife, Mireille, for over 35 years and we have two sons. We have been Shelby Township taxpayers since 1997 after moving into the Community. We moved to Shelby because we felt it was of one of Macomb County’s outstanding communities, and offered our children an excellent educational opportunity given the highly respected Utica Schools. Additionally, we felt that Shelby Township was a community which offered excellent recreational opportunities for our family given its lakes, streams, municipal parks, and nearby Stony Creek Metro Park.

A Tradition of Service

John Vermeulen’s family has a Tradition of Military Service. John’s Ancestors served during the Civil War and fought in a number of key Civil War Battles. His Grandfather served in combat in France with the US Army during World War I. During World War II John’s father served with the US Army Air Corps and became a disabled Veteran. During the Iranian Hostage Crisis, John joined the Army while still in High School and became a Military Policeman. He was later recruited to Air Force Intelligence, where he served for four years, and was part of an Outstanding Air Force Unit.

John is a Life Member of AMVETS & Member of the American Legion

When re-elected, John will Continue to work for the best interests of Township Taxpayers and Veterans.

The only Veteran on the Shelby Township Board with Law Enforcement Experience
